Ways The State Labor Government Are Putting Money Back In Your Pocket
We know the rising cost of living is making it harder for families to make ends meet – that's why we’re helping households with initiatives like:
Fairer V/Line Fares
We've promised to cap regional daily fares at the same price as a metro daily fare from 31 March 2023 - making public transport affordable and accessible to Victorians in every corner of our state.
This means more money in regional Victorians’ pockets and ensures families living in rural and regional Victoria can visit loved ones, and access health and education services in other regional cities and in Melbourne.

Free Kinder
As part of the once-in-a-generation Best Start, Best Life reform, our landmark Free Kinder program will give more Victorian parents - including many women - more flexibility to return to work if they choose.
- From 2023, three and four year old kinder will be free meaning families will save up to $2,500 a year for every child.
- From 2025, we’ll begin to open 50 government owned child care centres across the State in areas that need them most.
- And also from 2025 we’ll transition from 15 hours of four year old kinder to a 30 hour pre-prep program of play-based learning for every four-year-old child in Victoria.

Free TAFE
Our signature free TAFE policy is making TAFE courses in priority areas free, ensuring that rewarding careers are more accessible for more Victorians. Today there are more than 80 courses on the Free TAFE list and it's helping thousands of Victorians get the skills they need for the jobs they want.
And we have now extended Free TAFE to every Victorian. It means all Victorians can study for in‑demand jobs whether you already have a higher qualification or not.
TAFE is better today, than it's ever been.

Free Rego for Eligible Apprentices
We’re backing Victoria’s hard-working apprentices and helping ease cost of living pressures by making vehicle registration free for eligible apprentices from next month.
The free vehicle registration will come into effect from 1 July 2023, saving eligible trade apprentices up to $876 every year.
Carpenters, joiners, bricklayers, plumbers, electricians and chefs are among the Victorian apprentices eligible for the free registration, if their employer can verify that the use of their vehicle is an essential part of their work.

State Schools’ Relief (SSR) provides practical support to students in government schools across Victoria so that every student, regardless of background, can fully participate in education.
Schools can apply directly via the SSR online portal whenever they believe there is a need to support a student whose family/carers are facing difficulty in providing the appropriate uniform, footwear, or educational items for attending school.
If you are a parent or carer and you need financial assistance with your child’s government education, please request an appointment with your school principal, assistant principal, or welfare/wellbeing coordinator to discuss your needs.
